About Buckeye, Arizona

In 1877 Thomas Newt Clanton founded what became known as the Town of Buckeye. He came out west for better health and ended up living in Arizona for 49 years before his death at the age of 82. Like many other towns in Arizona, Buckeye flourished after the construction of the Buckeye Canal.

The canal was named by Malin M. Jackson in honor of his native state of Ohio. Jackson named the town Sidney after his hometown in Ohio; however, in 1910 the name was changed to Buckeye due to the significance of the Buckeye Canal. Buckeye, AZ experienced growth due to advances in transportation and technology.

Railroads connected Phoenix to Buckeye by 1912 and a state highway connected Phoenix to Buckeye by 1915. The boom in 1912 led to the development of major buildings along with the expansion of the business community. The town of Buckeye incorporated in 1926 and the first mayor was Hugh M. Watson.

In 1935 a local Buckeye tradition, Helzapopppin Days, was started by the Buckeye Chamber of Commerce. The festivities included street dances, carnival, and a rodeo, for which proceeds were donated to local Buckeye churches. Today Buckeye hosts a similar tradition known as Pioneer Days.
